Abstract

The article discusses the heuristic and critical potential of the concept of vulnerabilities for research on citizen participation, social movements, and struggles for recognition. Through the lens of vulnerabilities, the social action of the political subject always takes place despite and based on the existential and sociopolitical vulnerabilities they face daily. In this regard, when addressing classic dichotomies such as agency and suffering, victimization and resistance, the concept of vulnerabilities enables us to understand how situations of adversity and social precariousness intersect with political participation processes: a) introducing differences in the motivation and political agenda of a social movement; b) composing obstacles and opportunities for collective action; c) and most notably, undergoing a transformation by the very process of citizen participation. Under certain conditions, these vulnerabilities, while originally seen as challenges, can serve as vectors of resistance and social empowerment. Beyond a theoretical and methodological reflection, the article presents results of the empirical application of the vulnerabilities concept on political ethnography that mapped challenges and democratic innovations promoted by the anti-asylum social movement of Belo Horizonte in the process of constructing and performing the protest "day of anti-asylum struggle”.
