Armed Forces and Public Security in Brazil
a profile of Operations for Guaranteeing Law and Order (1992-2020)

The main goal of this article is to identify the profile of military Operations for Guaranteeing Law and Order (GLOs) deployed in Brazil from 1992 to 2020. To fulfil it, it was analyzed data compiled by the Brazilian Minister of Defense (MD) using descriptive statistics. It was discovered that the frequency of operations was constant during the whole period, that GLOs of event security are the most common and that those related to urban violence last on average five times more than others. It was also uncovered differences related to the type of operations employed on each region and state of Brazil. Finally, in terms of GLOs frequency, the South of Brazil seems to be an exception as from 1992 to 2020 were employed around six times less operations if compared to other regions. For the future, a comparative analysis of this phenomena may indicate the structural causes that can potentially explain the deployment of GLOs on the rest of Brazil, but not in the South.
