Interstate Competition, Critical Components and Supply Chains
Implications for the Liberal Order

This article analyzes the paradoxes of maintaining the liberal order within an international scene with great powers competition. Despite the current crisis in the liberal order, we understand it is accompanied by material changes in the system structure. In material terms, the continuous erosion of the common commands as well as the existence of contested zones open space to the return of spheres of influence, with direct implications to the international order. That said, the article analyses the connections among changes in the liberal order and the indigenization process of critical components and global supply chains by the United States and China, based on official documents, reports and empirical facts. In sum, the crisis of the liberal order is the result of material changes in the international system, consequently, how each country respond to the increase in interstate competition will have lasting effects on the reorganization of the coming order.
