a comparative analysis of non-state action the Conservation Units in the Northeast Brazil

What is the role of non-state actors in marine governance? This research focused on the first step: mapping the activities within Environmental Protection Areas (APAs) in Northeast Brazil. The theory emphasizes environmental problems and policies, as well as the challenges of governance at global levels and their local ramifications. From a methodological standpoint, we used the comparative method, analyzing data from primary and secondary sources of two Conservation Units (UCs): the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protection Area (APA) (PE/AL), considered the largest coastal-marine UC in Brazil, and the Naufrágio Queimado APA (PB). Approximately 25 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in operation were mapped and categorized, noting their proximity to the scientific community and the international sphere. The majority undertake initiatives such as beach cleanups, socio-environmental projects focused on fauna conservation, and support for fishing communities. Other differences were observed, broadening possibilities for typology and raising questions for a research agenda.
