In the last few decades, liberal political theorists have been increasingly concerned in the way states sponsor religious displays in their expressive capacity, that is, without coercion. ¿Are these forms of symbolic religious establishment permissible in a state that is legally separated from the church? This question gains relevance in the Chilean case, wherein the authority commemorates a variety of religious rituals inside the government palace. The one that arouses more resistance among the growing population of atheists, agnostics and non-believers in general is the giant Christmas crèche or Nativity scene. This article draws on Cecile Laborde's recently influential theory of “minimal secularism” to argue that the crèche in La Moneda only becomes politically problematic if it sends a message of civic exclusion to a vulnerable and subordinate identity, an argument that is hard to follow in the case of its critics.
